Marketplace lifecycle guide

    Marketing Automation for Marketplaces

Marketplace teams have at least two customer journeys to coordinate: the people who buy and the people who supply. Start with a few meaningful events, then use clear, permission-based email workflows to help each side reach its next useful milestone.

Map the two sides of the marketplace

Keep buyer and seller goals distinct. Buyers may need help finding a first item or completing an order. Sellers may need help finishing a profile, publishing a listing, or responding to an inquiry. Avoid sending one generic onboarding sequence to everyone.

    • Define the activation milestone for buyers and sellers separately.
    • Record the event and minimum data required to recognize that milestone.
    • Set a clear owner for each journey and its success measure.

    Start with observable marketplace events

A useful automation begins when something meaningful happens in the product. Tradly's workflow event catalog includes examples such as account creation, listing creation, order confirmation or cancellation, and negotiation events. Available events depend on the connected application and tenant; confirm the events shown in your workspace before designing a live journey.

    • Trigger a seller checklist after a seller account is created.
    • Send listing guidance when a listing is created or still needs attention.
    • Use an order event to time a post-purchase message or feedback request.

Build one journey at a time

Choose a single journey with a clear trigger, an appropriate email, and a measurable next step. Add a delay only when timing improves the experience. Define stop conditions so people do not receive onboarding messages after they have already completed the goal.

    • Draw the trigger, message, wait, and exit condition before building.
    • Test with internal accounts and realistic event payloads.
    • Review delivery, unsubscribe, and completion data before expanding the audience.

Keep consent and message purpose clear

Separate service communications from promotional campaigns. Use contact permission and unsubscribe status when deciding who can receive marketing email, and avoid using an event as permission by itself. Keep messages relevant to the action that triggered them.

    • Store the source and status of marketing consent.
    • Exclude unsubscribed or suppressed contacts from promotional sends.
    • Review regional privacy and email rules with your legal or compliance owner.

    Measure both marketplace sides

Track whether the journey helps a person complete the intended milestone, not just whether an email was opened. Compare buyer and seller outcomes separately and watch for unintended effects such as duplicate messages, support requests, or a rise in opt-outs.

    • Buyer measures: first search, first inquiry, or first completed order.
    • Seller measures: profile completion, first listing, or first successful response.
    • Operational measures: delivery failures, time to activation, and unsubscribe rate.
