    Marketplace Buyer Welcome Email Sequence

A buyer welcome sequence should help a new member reach a useful first marketplace experience. Keep it separate from seller onboarding, make each message earn its place, and stop or adjust the sequence when the buyer completes the milestone.

    Choose a buyer activation milestone

For one marketplace, activation may mean saving a listing; for another, it may be sending an inquiry or completing an order. Use a milestone that signals real progress rather than an email open. Confirm that your application sends the corresponding event to the workflow system.

Email 1: explain how to get value

Welcome the buyer and give one clear next step: browse a relevant category, search nearby inventory, or complete a profile that improves recommendations. State why any requested profile detail helps, and keep the message useful without requiring an immediate purchase.

Email 2: answer the next likely question

If the buyer has not reached the milestone, send help that addresses a real obstacle. Explain how to compare listings, contact a seller, or understand marketplace policies. Use one prominent action and link to accurate help content.

Email 3: close the loop after the first order

After an order is confirmed, remove the buyer from acquisition onboarding. Follow marketplace policy for delivery, support, and feedback messages. Keep marketing content distinct from order-service updates, and do not ask for a review before the buyer has had a fair chance to use the purchase.

Measure first value, not inbox activity

Track the time from signup to the chosen buyer milestone, the percentage who complete it, and any opt-out or complaint changes. Compare cohorts over a fixed period and avoid attributing an order to an email based only on a click.
